The family of Moses Wetang’ula, Speaker of the National Assembly, is in mourning following the death of their brother, Mwalimu James Mukhwana Wetang’ula.
Mukhwana’s death has been confirmed by his brother and Westland Member of Parliament, Tim Wanyonyi, in a post on his Facebook page on December 10, 2025.
Wanyonyi praised his brother as a courageous warrior and a mentor.
“I share with a heavy heart the news of the passing of my older brother, Mwalimu James Mukhwana Wetang’ula,” Tim’s statement read in part.
“It is a painful and deeply unsettling experience for the family, yet they remain thankful to God for the precious gift of his life.” According to 1 Thessalonians 5:18, it is God’s will to give thanks in all circumstances, as stated in Christ Jesus.
Mukhwana, a respected education expert and strict disciplinarian, was the eldest child of the senior Dominic Wetang’ula and had a brother in Tim and another in Moses.
Tributes have been paid to James.
Mourning the deceased is Trade and Investment PS Juma Mukhwana among those who have.
Mukhwana was shocked to discover the sudden death of his namesake, who had helped guide many individuals in their community.
I have been informed with great sadness of the death of my teacher and neighbor, James Mukhwana Wetangula. You played a significant role in our community, having guided numerous individuals. Farewell, my brother. Well-wishes are extended to you, Mukhwana tribute stated.
The deceased has also been paid tribute by aspiring governor and Bungoma politician Zachariah Barasa.
A DAP-K politician lamented the passing of Mukhwana as a significant loss to the community and offered his condolences to the Wetang’ulas.
Losing a man of quiet brilliance, gentle dignity, and strong moral character is tragic in itself — but for this loss to occur just a few months after the family’s farewell to their cherished mother makes the sorrow almost unbearably intense. My thoughts and prayers are with Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Hon. Timothy Wetang’ula, MP for Westlands, as they face yet another devastating loss.
Mwalimu James exemplified a unique elegance, being a noble individual whose wisdom, humility, and steadfast compassion brought illumination to every life he came into contact with. His legacy is not just remembered; it is deeply felt — in the minds he influenced, the hearts he inspired, and the values he quietly supported.
