The Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo is nearly complete, reaching 98% status, and will officially be handed over to the State on Wednesday, October 7. This special occasion will feature a limited dedication ceremony led by President William Ruto.
This mausoleum complex serves as the final resting place for Kenya’s first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and his son, Raila Odinga. The National Museums of Kenya has recognized it as a vital part of our national heritage, ensuring its protection.
The Ministry of Defence took the lead on construction in July, with military engineers and museum technical teams accomplishing most of the work in just three months.
During a recent inspection, Raila’s widow, Mama Idah Odinga, along with Deputy Chief of Staff Josephat Nanok, Medical Services PS Dr. Oluga Ouma, and Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, confirmed that the October 7 handover and State dedication will be an invitation-only event, complete with full military honors.
Due to space limitations and security measures, the public cannot attend the ceremony in person. However, the State will broadcast the event live on national television and set up public viewing screens at Nyamira School, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, and in Bondo town.
Public access to the mausoleum will open on Thursday, October 8.
A family-led candlelight vigil will take place at 6 p.m. on October 14 at Kang’o ka Jaramogi, leading up to the main public memorial service on October 15 at Migwena Cultural and Sports Ground in Bondo, welcoming all mourners.
The government and the Odinga family are also launching parallel memorial initiatives, including the establishment of a Democracy Institute in honor of Raila Odinga at the University of Nairobi, along with additional projects at the Kenya School of Government.
