On Friday, October 2, 2026, Raila Odinga Junior joined Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir and other leaders to launch a month-long program honoring his late father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
This Mombasa event was part of nationwide candle-lighting ceremonies as ODM and Raila’s supporters began commemorating the first anniversary of his passing. The initiative, called “Mwezi wa Baba,” will continue throughout October.
Raila Junior expressed his gratitude to the residents of Mombasa for their warm embrace of his father, highlighting the coastal city’s significance in Raila’s political journey.
“We kicked off Father’s Month in Mombasa alongside Governor Abdulswamad Nassir and the ODM Family. Baba wasn’t just a visitor here; he was a beloved host, and you welcomed him as family. Thank you, Mombasa,” Raila Junior shared on X after the event.
The candle-lighting took place simultaneously across the country at 6 PM, with Mombasa’s main event held at Treasury Square. Nairobi hosted the central ceremony at Uhuru Park, while Kisumu celebrated at Kisumu Central Square.
In Nairobi, large crowds gathered at Uhuru Park for the remembrance ceremony, enjoying music and performances before the candle-lighting. Supporters carried candles, flowers, and portraits of Raila, as political leaders and community members came together to honor the former ODM leader. His legacy illuminated the Kenyatta International Convention Centre tower that evening.
Commemorative activities also took place in various counties, including Narok, Uasin Gishu, Turkana, Kajiado, Migori, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Busia, Vihiga, Nakuru, Kilifi, Kiambu, Kisii, Wajir, Garissa, and Nyamira.
Looking ahead, the October program will feature more events leading up to the first anniversary of Raila’s death on October 15. ODM has planned a major rally in Kakamega on October 9, 2026, followed by activities in other regions. The month will culminate with additional commemorative events, including a national concert and legacy festival in Nairobi on October 31.
Additionally, the Raila Amolo Odinga Memorial National Steering Committee, led by Prof Adams Oloo, has organized a family-led program. An international candle-lighting ceremony will take place at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo on October 14, 2026, led by Raila’s widow, Ida Odinga, ahead of the main anniversary commemoration on October 15, 2026.
Raila passed away on October 15, 2025, while receiving medical treatment in India at the age of 80. He was laid to rest at his family home in Bondo, Siaya County.
