Residents of Joska, Machakos County, are reeling after a chilling attack that left one man dead and his wife in critical condition.
The couple, who had only recently settled into their new home in Joska, were assaulted in the early hours of September 18 by a gang that stormed the compound without taking any valuables.
The victim, 54-year-old Martin Maina, was bludgeoned inside his bedroom as he and his wife cried for help. Detectives say the assailants gained entry by scaling the perimeter wall, smashing window panes, and cutting through metal grills before striking.
By the time neighbours and police arrived, Maina had sustained fatal head injuries, while his wife was found badly wounded from blows inflicted with a blunt object. She remains hospitalised and traumatised.
What puzzles investigators is that nothing was stolen, raising questions about whether the attackers were driven by a personal grudge rather than a robbery attempt. Police believe the intruders came with one mission: to kill.
The gruesome murder has spread fear among Joska residents, many of whom are new property owners in the fast-growing settlement. Calls are mounting for tighter security patrols and swift justice.
Maina’s body has been moved to the mortuary as detectives continue with investigations. An autopsy is expected to provide further clues.
