Faith Kipyegon breaks 1,500 metres World Record

Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon has set the new World Record in the Women’s 1,500m race with a time of 3 minutes, 49.11 seconds at the Florence Diamond League in Italy.

The 29 year old broke the previous record of 3 minutes, 50.07 seconds held by Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba since 2015.

Kipyegon later posted in her social media “WORLD RECORD – 3:49.11 I am really thankful, today was a wonderful day in which everything came together. The world record was in my mind since last year, but I wanted to approach it slowly by slowly to see what was possible this year. I cant believe it! Now I have achieved what I wanted and what was in my heart and in my mind. All the athletes waiting for me at the finish line made me emotional. Thanks so much for all the support, it means a lot.”

Kipyegon finished more than 12 seconds ahead of reigning European champion Laura Muir and Australia’s Jessica Hull. She is considered the greatest ever woman in the discipline with two world and two Olympic titles to her name, crushed the rest of the field in Tuscany.
