Orengo Calls for United Opposition Ahead of 2027

Siaya Governor James Orengo has confidently called for unity among the opposition, emphasizing the need for a shared agenda and the selection of a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, October 1, Orengo expressed his commitment to the struggle for change, highlighting his active participation in launching a political vehicle.

“I wholeheartedly support the quest for change, which requires our unity and proactive political action. We are embarking on this journey with our new political vehicle and remain dedicated to fostering opposition unity and identifying a single presidential candidate,” he stated.

Orengo also expressed his support for the Linda Mwananchi movement, reaffirming his dedication to its initiatives.

“We celebrate the success of the Linda Mwananchi movement and remain unwavering in our commitment. Aluta continua!” he added.

This statement comes as the opposition gears up for the 2027 elections, with leaders strategizing on how to effectively challenge President William Ruto.

Orengo is among the figures in the opposition looking to establish his own political vehicle. His new party, anticipated to be unveiled in October, will operate under the initials LDP and feature blue and white branding, along with a round hat and a fly whisk—a symbol linked to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The party’s slogan will be “Mbele Kuzuri.”

His political plans coincide with the rise of the Linda Mwananchi movement, which aims to create a viable national political alternative.

Notably, Orengo did not attend the movement’s leadership retreat on September 26, where Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was endorsed as the leader and presidential candidate for the 2027 election. The movement also announced plans to establish a political party through which Sifuna would contest the presidency.

Orengo has previously questioned the automatic endorsement of Sifuna for the presidential ticket, advocating for a fair nomination process to resolve competing ambitions.

In an interview earlier in September, he emphasized that while competing ambitions are natural, they should ultimately lead to one unified opposition candidate.

His recent statement reinforces his support for a united opposition while pursuing his own political aspirations.

Having first run for the presidency in 2002 under the Social Democratic Party, Orengo has yet to clarify whether he plans to seek the presidency again in 2027 or pursue another role within the opposition coalition.
