Beyond the Classroom: Meet Teacher Kennedy Ochieng from Kisumu

Teacher Kennedy Ochieng Owino; alias Ken Wasudi

Kennedy Ochieng Owino; alias Ken Wasudi, a teacher of Biology and Chemistry at Bolo Girls Secondary School has caught the eyes of Kisumu’s Governor Prof Peter Anyang Nyongo and Senator Isaac Mwaura.

The teacher has come out as an advocate of girl child education and a crusader against stigmatization of children born with albinism.

He doubles as motivational speaker which he offers for free longside teaching and writing. One Planet Publishing firm is instrumental in this endeavor. One of the books titled ” From The Heart of My Mother”, has helped change the regions perspective on girl child education. The teacher gets invites from churches, primary and secondary schools to talk to girls and boys.

This engagement has helped reduce teenage pregnancy in Kisumu county and its environs and impacted positively on behavioural and attitudinal change amongst girls. “Coloured Hearts”, his second book has also helped residents tone down on albinism. The locals have always viewed albinism as a societal curse linked with underworld myths and not a scientific phenomenon.

Mr. Owino has also extended his love for girl child education by supporting one Brender Akinyi of Form Two at Kanyamedha mixed secondary school. Brender who has topped since joining the school is a total orphan who stays with her aunt Grace Akinyi Owuoth.
