Marsabit Faith Leaders Launch Peace Initiative Ahead of 2027 Elections

Clerics, aid groups, and local peace-builders in Marsabit have initiated a year-long project to foster peace and unity as the country gears up for next year’s general elections. This initiative responds to the rising political tensions nationwide.

The project, called the Interfaith Mechanism for Conflict Mitigation (LIMCO), launched in Saku and Moyale constituencies, unites the Inter Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK), Christian Aid, and Islamic Relief Kenya. Its goal is to transform mosques and churches into early warning systems for potential unrest.

Local leaders emphasize that places of worship are often the first to experience the impacts of conflict. Pastor Said Lole, chairman of the Marsabit Pastors Fellowship, stated, “This project enables communities to develop a social cohesion charter and advocate for peace at the county and national levels.”

In a county marked by election-related violence, traditional security measures frequently arrive too late. LIMCO seeks to change this narrative by focusing on four key areas: building the capacity of the Marsabit Interfaith Council, enhancing early warning systems, promoting social cohesion, and advancing advocacy.

Omar Qutara from the Marsabit Peace Committee highlighted that this community-led initiative will incorporate a faith perspective. This approach is vital, as local religious leaders often detect the first signs of unrest.

LIMCO aims to turn those early warnings into proactive measures to prevent violence. Linus Nthigai, managing director of IRCK, noted that the program addresses the charged political atmosphere in Kenya, especially in conflict-prone Marsabit during elections.

Francis Chege, programs manager at Islamic Relief Kenya, emphasized the project’s goal to alleviate tensions arising from political rivalry, religious differences, and ethnic divisions. “We are bringing together all religious groups ahead of the elections,” he stated.

A key aspect of LIMCO is its focus on empowering women, who are often seen as passive victims but play crucial roles in both conflict and peace-building. The project will engage political leaders, security agencies, and media to promote positive narratives over divisive ones.

Additionally, the program will reach children, youth, men, women, and persons with disabilities, all of whom have experienced conflict and deserve a hopeful future.
