Detectives in Nyatike Subcounty, Migori County, are actively investigating a violent robbery that injured three foreign nationals at a mining site.
According to police reports, the incident occurred at a leaching compound owned by Marowa Mines Company Limited in Kalangi Sublocation. The company manager informed authorities that five unidentified assailants, dressed in attire resembling jungle police uniforms and believed to be armed, invaded the mining site.
The attackers overpowered the watchmen and workers, forcing them to lie down while demanding money for their release. During this harrowing ordeal, the gang stole Sh400,000 in cash and received an additional Sh55,000 through other means.
Three Chinese nationals suffered injuries during the attack and were promptly transported to Migori Life Care Hospital, where they received treatment and were later discharged in stable condition. Police announced on Sunday that they are pursuing leads in this case.
This incident highlights a troubling trend, as the area has seen a rise in crime associated with local mining activities.
In a separate incident, police in Siaya Subcounty have initiated investigations into a daylight robbery where a woman was ambushed and robbed of cash and valuables near the Sodhof River.
The victim reported that unknown individuals attacked her while she was driving home. Preliminary investigations reveal that earlier that day, she had withdrawn Sh70,000 from a bank in Siaya and placed it in her handbag, which already contained an additional Sh30,000.
After visiting an agrovet shop near White House Hotel in Siaya to purchase fertilizer, she was targeted. Upon reaching the Sodhof River within Karapul Sublocation, a saloon car that had been trailing her overtook and blocked her vehicle. Three men exited the car and forcefully entered her vehicle, ransacking it and stealing Sh100,000 in cash, 10 kilograms of fertilizer, a Tecno Pro mobile phone, and a handbag containing various documents. Fortunately, the victim did not sustain any injuries during the incident.
Police have already visited the scene and begun investigations to identify the suspects and recover the stolen items. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant, especially after withdrawing large sums of money, and to report any suspicious vehicles or individuals to the police.
These incidents appear to be increasingly common and may involve insider knowledge, with attackers often receiving assistance from those familiar with the victims’ activities.
