Six Convicted in George Muchai Robbery Case as Simon Wambugu Acquitted

Simon Wambugu Gichamba has received acquittal in the robbery with violence case concerning the late Member of Parliament, George Muchai.

On Friday, March 13, 2026, Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina delivered a judgment that found six other defendants guilty of the charges against them. The court convicted Eric Isabwa, known as Chairman; Raphael Kimani Gachii, known as Kim Butcher; Mustafa Kimani Anyoni, known as Musto; Stephen Astiva Lipopo, known as Chokore; Jane Wanjiru Kamau, known as Shiro; and Margaret Njeri Wachiuri on various counts related to robbery with violence.

The ruling confirmed that the prosecution successfully demonstrated, beyond reasonable doubt, the involvement of these six accused individuals in multiple violent robbery incidents, including the attack on the MP.

Magistrate Onyina specifically identified Isabwa, Kimani, Anyoni, and Lipopo as guilty of robbery with violence under section 296(2) of the Penal Code. The court established that on February 6, 2015, along Waiyaki Way in Nairobi, these four individuals robbed Michael Ngatia Gituto while armed with dangerous weapons, including a G3 rifle and pistols. During this incident, they threatened Ngatia with actual violence, stealing his motor vehicle, a gas cylinder, and two mobile phones.

Additionally, the court found them guilty of robbing Gladys Waithera of her motor vehicle, mobile phone, laptop, and Ksh1,000 cash, again armed with a G3 rifle and pistols on February 7, 2015, at Green Belt Estate in Kiambu County. On the same date and location, they also robbed Irene Muthoni Wambui of her mobile phone and Ksh600, threatening her with violence during the act.

Conversely, the court ruled that Jane Wanjiru Kamau, Margaret Njeri Wachiuri, and Simon Wambugu Gichamba are not guilty of the three robbery counts. “Pursuant to Section 215 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the fifth, sixth, and seventh accused persons (Wanjiru, Njeri, and Wambugu) are acquitted of counts one, two, and three,” Magistrate Onyina stated.

In addition to the robbery convictions, the court found Eric Isabwa and Margaret Njeri guilty of possessing a firearm without a certificate, violating section 4(2)(a) of the Firearms Act, Cap. 114, Laws of Kenya. The court established that they were unlawfully in possession of a G3 rifle on February 13, 2015, in Kinoo, Kiambu County, along with seven rounds of 7.62 millimetre calibre ammunition.

Raphael Kimani, known as Kim Butcher, also faced conviction for possessing a Ceska pistol without a firearm certificate on the same date in Rironi, Kiambu County, and for having 15 rounds of 9-millimetre calibre ammunition.

Moreover, Jane Wanjiru Kamau, also referred to as Chiro, was found guilty of possessing two rounds of 9-millimetre calibre ammunition without a firearm certificate on February 13, 2015, in the Kanyamanga area of Kangemi, Nairobi.

In a significant development, Simon Wambugu Gichamba has been acquitted of all three charges against him. “The seventh accused person, Simon Wambugu Gichamba, is ordered to be set at liberty unless otherwise lawfully held,” Magistrate Onyina ruled.

The court has scheduled the sentencing for the six convicted individuals for March 18, 2026.
