Kenya Met Warns Nairobi Residents Over Heavy Rains

Residents of Nairobi have been advised to remain cautious after the Kenya Meteorological Department issued an alert predicting moderate to heavy rainfall in the city and nearby areas within the next 24 hours.

In a weather advisory released on Thursday, the department said rainfall is expected between 9 a.m. on Thursday and 9 a.m. on Friday across parts of the Nairobi metropolitan region. According to the forecast, the downpour may cause localised flooding, particularly in low-lying neighbourhoods and areas with poor drainage systems.

Weather officials urged residents living in flood-prone areas to take precautionary measures and stay alert as the rains continue. Motorists have also been cautioned to drive carefully because heavy rainfall may lead to reduced visibility and slippery road conditions.

The warning comes at a time when several regions across Kenya are experiencing increased rainfall linked to the current seasonal weather pattern. Authorities say such conditions can quickly lead to flooding if drainage channels are blocked or overwhelmed by runoff water.

Meanwhile, the meteorological department has also issued a separate advisory to people living along the Kenyan Coast. Fishermen, mariners and coastal communities have been urged to exercise caution due to the possibility of strong winds and rough waters during the week.

According to the seven-day marine forecast covering March 11 to March 17, winds along the coast are expected to blow mainly from the north-east toward the east at speeds ranging between two and twenty knots. Wave heights may vary between 0.2 and 1.6 metres, creating sea conditions described as slight to moderate.

Weather experts noted that winds over coastal waters in areas near Mombasa and Kilifi County may occasionally strengthen during afternoon and evening hours due to sea breeze effects.
