Mango Season in Kenya: Sweet, Healthy and Affordable

The arrival of mango season marks a delightful time for fruit enthusiasts, as this delectable fruit reaches its peak. Many individuals savor mangoes daily, whether indulging in them whole, blending them into smoothies, crafting fruit salads, or creating decadent desserts. Indeed, mangoes have established themselves as the epitome of fruit luxury.

These fruits are not only sweet and fragrant but also packed with nutrients and remarkably versatile. Their affordability ensures that even those with the tightest budgets can enjoy them.

In Kenya, the mango season typically commences in November, gaining traction through December, and reaches its splendid climax between December and February. During this period, markets overflow with mangoes, often sold at remarkably low prices, starting as low as Sh20. However, the supply begins to dwindle from March to April, although regions like Kitui and Makueni, renowned for their mango cultivation, extend the season’s bounty.

As April progresses, a few mangoes may linger in stalls until May and July, offering a final sweet taste of what many consider the most delectable time of the year.

Personally, I hold mangoes in high esteem as my favorite fruit, embodying a perfect fusion of elegance, tropical indulgence, and healthful delight.

Despite their simplicity, mangoes possess a versatility that elevates them into five-star culinary experiences. From refreshing mango salsa, chilled juices, and smoothies to mango-infused barbecue sauce paired with chicken wings and grilled chicken breast, the culinary possibilities are limitless.

Globally, they serve as excellent breakfast options, enhancing oatmeal and pancakes, being baked into cakes, or paired with yogurt and ice cream.

Who could have imagined that a Sh20 fruit, harvested from arid lands, could grace five-star menus? This phenomenon beautifully encapsulates the essence of “from grass to grace.”

For many, mangoes transcend mere sustenance; they serve as skincare remedies, a beauty secret often overlooked. The same nutrients that nourish the body also benefit the skin. Rich in vitamins A, C, and E, along with antioxidants, mangoes enhance collagen production, combat acne, and brighten and hydrate the skin. Their moisturizing properties effectively alleviate dryness and roughness.

Mangoes undoubtedly fulfill their purpose. Without needing to announce their presence, they enhance every dish, nurture the skin, and uplift spirits. While the mango season lasts, I intend to relish every moment, and I encourage you to do the same.
