Ruto Urges EU Support for Peace in Sudan and Stronger Africa–EU Ties

President William Ruto has put the deteriorating Sudan conflict at the forefront of his diplomatic efforts, calling on the European Union to assist Africa in working towards a unified and trustworthy route to peace.

On the sidelines of the 7th African Union-European Union Summit in Luanda, Angola, Ruto conferred with European Union Council President António Costa, voicing deep concern about the rapidly worsening humanitarian disaster.

The president delivered a grim assessment of the situation in Sudan via a post on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, highlighting the immense hardship faced by numerous families amidst widespread devastation.

He stated that they had discussed the serious situation in Sudan, encompassing the loss of life, the humanitarian crisis, and the devastation of both public and private property and infrastructure.

Ruto stressed that the conflict cannot be resolved through force, insisting that the nation requires a political process that takes into account all viewpoints. “He stated that Sudan requires a comprehensive political agreement that involves all relevant parties, including political groups, civil organizations, and other key national figures.”

The president made it evident that stability in Sudan will only emerge from a dependable, people-focused strategy. He cautioned against the military dominating the peace process. Lasting peace cannot be achieved through a military path, he said, pointing out that a legitimate process will bring stability to Sudan.

“A reliable and trustworthy process is the only way to achieve stability and revive hope for the people of Sudan,” Ruto pointed out, emphasizing Kenya’s dedication to supporting ongoing peace initiatives in the area.

The message he sent drew attention to the human suffering that was at the heart of the conflict, and urged international solidarity to assist in rebuilding and recovery in Sudan.

Kenya-EU relations

Ruto emphasized the established ties between Kenya and the EU, pointing out that the connection has grown much stronger over time.

“He noted that Kenya and the European Union have a robust partnership founded on extensive collaboration spanning many years, which has been strengthened by the Economic Partnership Agreement that took effect in July 2024.”

He stressed that the new trade agreement had opened the door for more Kenyan products to be stocked on European shelves. Ruto stated this agreement grants Kenya duty-free and quota-free access to the EU’s 450 million market, thereby opening up new opportunities for our agricultural products.

This access brings hope for farmers and exporters who have been seeking fairer entry into global markets for a long time.

Beyond trade, the president took the chance to push for enhanced political cooperation. Ruto urged the EU to support Africa’s efforts to enhance the African Union, arguing that the continent requires a unified voice capable of effectively tackling the difficulties faced by its inhabitants.

The speaker is urging the EU to back their plan to revamp the African Union, so it can effectively represent Africa’s interests as a unified voice, he stated, pointing out that the AU’s technical capabilities and Europe’s expertise will help create a more capable AU. “Europe’s experience and technical capabilities can assist us in creating an African Union that addresses the requirements and ambitions of our citizens,” he stated.
