More than ten people are nursing serious wounds at the Bondo Referral Hospital in Siaya county after chaos erupted at Kambare polling Station.
This follows the chaotic clash between two political supporters during the South Gem by-election on Thursday 8.
The tumult, according to the police broke out following voter – bribery allegation and accusations by supporters of Brian Anyango, an independent candidate and Polycarp Wanga of ODM. Confirming the rumpus, Gem subcounty police commander Charles Chacha said stated that a similar incidence was reported from Aluor polling Station after voter – malpractice emerged.
“The report we have is that one person was attacked at Aluor Village for allegedly bribing voters to cast their ballot for one of the leading candidates. Six men, who were armed with crude weapons, attacked the victim,” Commander Charles Chacha confirmed.
ODM’s Polycarp Wanga told Nyanza Daily at Ojwaya Polling station that he expected many of his supporters and friends, some of whom had come from outside the ward to embrace and celebrate his victory.
“I have many people from outside Gem, some are even coming from outside Siaya as a County. You know you cannot restrict someone from coming home to celebrate the election outcome and victory,” he said.
Police said during the chaos, severa vehicles vehicles were stoned and damaged by the rogue crowd who were armed with dangerous weapons, causing several injuries to the residents.
However, the police managed to restore peace and the voting process continued.
Eight candidates were contesting for South Gem by-election following the death of the ward representative Nick Wanga in July 2022.
