The story of Kenya’s leadership has always found its roots in university corridors, student movements, and campus platforms where young minds are shaped, challenged, and prepared for national responsibility. In this sense, from the lecture halls to the leadership forums, student governance has been the training ground for some of the country’s most respected and impactful leaders.
With this long-standing legacy in place, the University Student Leaders Association proudly
announces the inaugural University Voices Awards 2025, a national platform that will celebrate
excellence, impact, and transformative leadership within Kenya’s higher education ecosystem.
Speaking about the vision behind the awards, USLA CEO Albert Maloba underscore the important
role that campuses play in grooming the nation’s future leaders.
“Youth leadership is not an accident. It is nurtured, disciplined, and mentored at the campus
level. Most of our outstanding national leaders today were not born in boardrooms; they were
molded in student leadership spaces where values, ethics, and responsibility were instilled,” said
Maloba.
These include Governor Irungu Kang’ata, James Orengo, Gladys Wanga, President William Ruto,
who was in Christian Union leadership, Hon. Babu Owino, Hon. Isaac Mwaura, and the new
Principal Secretary for Youth Affairs, Jacobs Fikirini, among many others. Their journeys affirm
that universities remain the cradle of disciplined, visionary, and nationally grounded leadership.
-From Activism to Invested Leadership.
In acknowledging the historical role of activism in shaping democratic expression, USLA is
directing the national conversation toward intentional investment in student leaders who are
vocal yet strategic, ethical, solution-oriented, and development-driven.
“We are transitioning from reactive activism into well-invested leadership. Student leaders must
be equipped, mentored and supported to become the architects of Kenya’s future, not just critics
of its present,” said Maloba.
The University Voices Awards 2025 will therefore highlight student leaders who exemplify
integrity, innovation, service, and commitment to national development without material
incentives or recognition.
- A Call for Strategic National Support
In a forward-looking appeal, USLA is urging the national government, under the leadership of H.E
President William Ruto, to consider instituting a Student Leadership Development Fund to
support, mentor, and recognize structured student leadership initiatives across universities.
“Just like sports talents receive structured investment to produce gold medalists, leadership too
must be nurtured to create ethical, visionary and patriotic leaders. If we invest in student
leadership early, we will significantly reduce the rise of corrupt, unethical and self-centered
leadership in the future,” Maloba said.
Such a fund would allow for:
- Leadership training programs
- Mentorship initiatives
Governance capacity building - Innovation support for student-led ideas
- Policy engagement platforms
- Recognition of impactful leadership projects
This approach, USLA believes, will churn out leaders steeped in service, discipline, and
nationhood.
Until the middle classes attained a political voice and somewhat better living conditions,
probably no more than a small minority of city dwellers in England ever knew anything like the
decent housing circumstances to which Europeans take for granted today.

The University Voices Awards seek to reshape the leadership narrative. Impact today is no longer
