The Ministry of Education has appointed Prof. Noah Midamba as the new Chairperson of the Moi University Council, a move made in response to ongoing management issues within the institution.
Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba announced the appointment in a gazette notice dated Friday, January 17, 2025, which also revoked the existing council members.
Effective immediately, Prof. Midamba will lead the council for a term of three years. The notice stated, “In exercise of the powers conferred by section 36 (1) of the Universities Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education appoints Noah Midamba (Prof.) to be Chairperson of the Council of Moi University, for a period of three (3) years.”
Prior to this appointment, Midamba served as Vice-Chancellor of KCA University for over a decade before leaving in 2021. Alongside him, new council members appointed include Prof. Ronald Wasike, Dr. Mercy Nyambura Kanyara, Dr. Edward Sambili, and Anne Weceke Makori.
The appointments come on the heels of revocations for Dr. Humphrey Kimani Njuguna, Prof. Clara Samiji Momanyi, Christopher Khaemba, Eusilah Jepkosgei Ngeny, and Susan Amlango Aletia.
This leadership shift follows a week of labor unrest at Moi University, where staff members went on strike, citing the institution’s failure to adhere to agreements made with stakeholders in the Return to Work Formula. Earlier in December, CS Ogamba pledged to address the university’s management issues, vowing that investigations would be conducted and necessary actions taken against any wrongdoing.
“We are prepared to take necessary actions so that our universities are run in a transparent manner, ensuring credible institutions that offer proper academic qualifications,” Ogamba stated, emphasizing the need for accountability in the sector.
