Nairobi Expressway Free Access Extended Amid Flooding

MOJA Expressway has announced an extension of its free access period due to ongoing flooding affecting several Nairobi roads.

In a statement released today, the company confirmed that motorists can now use the Nairobi Expressway at no cost until 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

This extension aims to assist drivers in quickly and safely navigating waterlogged areas, thereby alleviating traffic congestion on heavily impacted surrounding roads.

“Given the current flooding situation, we prioritize public safety; therefore, the Nairobi Expressway will remain free until 6:00 a.m. on March 7, 2026,” the statement reads.

The company emphasizes its commitment to supporting the public during this challenging time, facilitating safe passage through affected sections while easing traffic pressure.

Motorists are encouraged to drive cautiously, adhere to traffic guidance, and stay alert to changing road conditions.

MOJA Expressway reiterated that public safety is its top priority during this period.

“We urge all motorists to exercise caution, follow traffic guidance, and remain vigilant about changing road conditions. Thank you for choosing the Nairobi Expressway,” the statement added.

Earlier, MOJA Expressway announced a temporary extension of free usage from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. due to flooding along the A8 (Mombasa Road).

“Dear motorists, due to the ongoing downpour and flooding along the A8, MOJA extends free usage of the Nairobi Expressway from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. For emergencies, please call our rescue hotline at 0111039888,” the announcement stated.

Flooding in Nairobi has led to significant disruptions, with videos and images on social media showing motorists navigating submerged roads.

The heavy rains have resulted in severe traffic jams throughout the Nairobi Metropolitan area, complicating evening commutes.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, the ongoing rainfall has caused property damage and displacement among affected communities.

“Flooding has impacted several areas in Nairobi, leading to road closures and significant distress. Affected locations include Pipeline, Embakasi, Mukuru, Kibra, Mathare, and South B, among others,” the Kenya Red Cross stated.

Major roads impacted include sections of CBD roads, Uhuru Highway, Mombasa Road, and Thika Superhighway. Kenya Red Cross teams are actively conducting search and rescue operations in these areas.
