MCSK accuses Government of withholding Ksh. 300 million in Royalties

The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) has accused the government of withholding over Ksh. 300 million in royalties intended for Kenyan musicians. Speaking at the burial of MCSK CEO Dr. Ezekiel Mutua’s father, Chairman Lazarus Mulli raised concerns about the intimidation of artists by the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO).

Mulli alleged that KECOBO has diverted royalties into a government-controlled account instead of distributing the funds to musicians. He criticized the regulator for demanding 30% of the proceeds, despite not being a Collective Management Organization (CMO) or representing any artists.

“This has created tension and conflict. The money belongs to musicians and should be released in full,” Mulli stated, emphasizing that the actions of KECOBO have unfairly targeted Dr. Mutua.

He called on President William Ruto to intervene, suggesting that individuals within the government are responsible for the ongoing impasse. Mulli urged those behind the alleged sabotage to stop making false accusations against musicians and prioritize the release of the withheld funds, asserting that the President’s intervention is crucial for ensuring artists receive their rightful earnings through the MCSK.
