Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has disclosed that retired soldiers are volunteering to secure his homes following recent threats to his safety. In an appearance on Inooro TV’s Kiririmbi show, Gachagua noted that his official security team has been withdrawn since the consecration of Bishop Peter Kimani Ndung’u in Embu County on November 16, 2024.
After his impeachment, Gachagua was assigned six security officers—four stationed at his residence and two for private duties. However, he now relies on retired officers, many from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Kenya Forest Service (KFS), to ensure his safety amid alleged assassination attempts.
“I’m being guarded by volunteers who are retired officers. After the attack in Limuru, around 300 people from various areas came to offer their support,” Gachagua stated. “Above all, God is watching over us; He is the head of all security forces.”
Gachagua recounted a disturbing incident during a funeral in Limuru, Kiambu County, on November 28, where he claims an organized attack targeted him. Armed assailants disrupted the event and pelted his car with stones. He managed to escape unharmed, crediting his survival to divine intervention and the bravery of young men who shielded him.
“In Limuru, I had no security; it was God who protected me,” he said. “The attackers were shouting ‘gutha mutwe’ (hit the head) as they surrounded my car. Fortunately, four young men lay on top of me, preventing any strikes. One of them was injured and is now hospitalized.”
Gachagua believes these attacks are politically motivated due to his criticism of President William Ruto’s government. He hinted at a major political announcement set for 2025, indicating his plans for the future.
