Manchester United Slam “Baffling” VAR Calls in 2-2 Draw vs Bournemouth

United expressed their outrage over what they described as “astonishing” and “baffling” refereeing decisions during their thrilling 2-2 draw against Bournemouth. The match featured two awarded penalties and one missed opportunity, which left the club feeling particularly frustrated.

Harry Maguire’s special day, marked by his recall to the England squad, was overshadowed by his sending-off at the Vitality Stadium. However, it was the officiating that drew the ire of the United camp.

Maguire received a red card for pulling back Evanilson inside the box with just ten minutes remaining, while Manchester United held a 2-1 lead. Junior Kroupi converted the resulting penalty. Interim manager Michael Carrick voiced his anger over the failure to award United an earlier penalty for what he deemed a similar foul.

The incident in question involved Amad Diallo, who appeared to be pulled back by Adrien Truffert while United led 1-0 thanks to a penalty from Bruno Fernandes. Carrick described the decisions made by the officials as “baffling,” stating, “He definitely got one of them wrong. He awarded one penalty for an identical situation and ignored the other.”

Carrick emphasized the inconsistency, arguing, “If he believes one is a penalty, then the second must be as well. I cannot comprehend how that was overlooked. It’s as clear as day.”

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes echoed these sentiments, suggesting that if Bournemouth received a penalty for Maguire’s foul, then Diallo deserved one too. He remarked, “We could have been 2-0 up, but instead, we conceded a goal after not being awarded a penalty, only to then face a penalty against us.”

The match ignited after a goalless first half when United was awarded a penalty for Alex Jimenez’s foul on Matheus Cunha. Fernandes converted to give his team the lead. However, the key moments unfolded shortly after, as Diallo fell in the box after being tugged by Truffert, yet no penalty was awarded. Bournemouth capitalized and equalized through Ryan Christie.

The Premier League match center later clarified that VAR confirmed the referee’s decision not to award a penalty for Truffert’s challenge, deeming the contact insufficient for a foul.

After United regained the lead through an own goal by James Hill, the drama continued when Maguire was sent off for another foul in the box, leading to Kroupi’s successful penalty kick. The Premier League match center reported that VAR upheld the referee’s decision, citing a holding offense.

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole voiced his disappointment, questioning the disparity in penalty decisions. He remarked, “When you break it down, what is the difference?”

Conversely, ex-Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp defended the decisions, explaining, “The difference lies in the fact that one player was denied a clear goalscoring opportunity, while the other situation was less conclusive.”

Despite the controversies, VAR did not intervene to prompt a review of the referee’s decisions. Fans now wonder about the apparent inconsistency in officiating.

Becky, a concerned supporter, lamented, “Inconsistent refereeing can truly ruin the game. It’s frustrating when VAR fails to rectify clear errors.” Freddie added, “We should be celebrating a 3-1 win, yet here we are discussing the officiating inconsistencies that cost teams crucial points.” Ryan concluded, “VAR seems to be more problematic than helpful; it may be time to reevaluate its role in the game.”
