Kenya on High Alert for Sudan Ebola Virus Following Outbreak in Uganda

The Ministry of Health has issued a critical public alert in response to the recent outbreak of the Sudan Ebola Virus Disease in neighboring Uganda. Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni announced the government’s proactive measures to protect Kenyan citizens, given the porous nature of the Kenya-Uganda border.

In a statement released on Friday, Muthoni emphasized the importance of enhanced surveillance at all entry points into Kenya. “We want to assure the public that the Ministry of Health is fully committed to safeguarding the health and safety of all Kenyans during this concerning time,” she said.

The symptoms of the Sudan Ebola Virus Disease often manifest suddenly, beginning with fever, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, and general body malaise. In the later stages, patients may experience hemorrhagic symptoms, such as bleeding from various body orifices.

Individuals exhibiting signs of Ebola are urged to seek immediate medical attention and refrain from attempting to treat the illness at home. Families of those who have succumbed to the disease are warned against touching or washing the body, as proper procedures must be followed for a safe and dignified burial.

“The virus can spread rapidly to family members or healthcare providers who do not wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while caring for Ebola patients or handling the bodies of those who have died from the disease,” Muthoni cautioned.

The public is also advised to avoid contact with both live and dead wild animals, as well as their meat, feces, and body fluids. Additionally, unprotected sexual activities should be avoided to minimize the risk of transmission.

The outbreak was confirmed in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, where the first patient died from the virus earlier this week. As the situation develops, the Ministry of Health remains vigilant and urges all Kenyans to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
