The National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged lawmakers from across the Commonwealth to strengthen unity and uphold democratic ideals as the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference continues in Barbados.
In his address to delegates, Wetang’ula emphasized that leadership anchored in integrity and inclusivity remains essential for sustainable governance. He reminded leaders that listening to the concerns of citizens is the true measure of public service.
“Integrity is about discipline and accountability. We must be truthful to our people and open to their grievances. Those who truly understand their citizens are best placed to serve them,” he stated.
The Speaker noted that effective leadership also requires humility and teamwork. “Sometimes, leadership means stepping back to create room for others to participate meaningfully in decision-making,” he added.
On the sidelines of the conference, Wetang’ula held talks with CPA Secretary-General Stephen Twigg, where he reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to supporting CPA programs on good governance, gender equality, youth empowerment, climate action, and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
Twigg commended Kenya for its active leadership role within the African region of the CPA, noting that the country continues to play a significant part in promoting parliamentary democracy across the continent.
Wetang’ula is leading a delegation of Kenyan legislators including Beatrice Adagala, Zaheer Jhanda, Naisula Lesuuda, and Tim Wanyonyi. The team also attended the 3rd Emilia Monjowa Lecture, held in memory of Cameroon’s former Deputy Speaker.
During the session, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley highlighted the need for integrity and public participation as guiding principles of democratic governance.
The CPA’s 68th Conference has drawn delegates from more than 180 parliaments worldwide to deliberate on pressing political and governance challenges, reinforcing the Commonwealth’s shared commitment to democracy, accountability, and inclusive leadership.
