Nairobi County Government Enhances Legal Team to Cut Costs and Boost Efficiency

In a strategic move to bolster its legal services, the Nairobi County Government has welcomed 60 new in-house lawyers, with a clear objective to minimize reliance on outside counsel and tackle soaring legal expenses. This initiative aligns with Governor Johnson Sakaja’s vision to improve service delivery across the county.

At the conclusion of a two-day induction program for the newly recruited legal professionals, Governor Sakaja highlighted the pressing need to control costs associated with outsourcing legal services. “We have witnessed instances where a single legal firm charges Nairobi County over a billion shillings. This is not sustainable. By hiring our own lawyers, we not only save money but also gain better oversight over the quality of our legal work,” he stated.

With the addition of these 60 lawyers, Nairobi County will now have a total of 84 in-house legal practitioners. This expansion is expected to enhance the county’s ability to manage legal affairs effectively, providing each sector with dedicated legal counsel specializing in various fields, including litigation, conveyancing, contracting, compliance, and legislative affairs. The result is anticipated to be greater efficiency in managing legal issues and quicker resolution of ongoing cases.

Governor Sakaja also underscored the transformative role the new legal team will play in the governance of the county. “You are an integral part of this administration, and we have high expectations for you to execute our manifesto. Even in the face of challenges, stay true to your principles. You are here to make a difference and restore hope,” he urged the new recruits.

The Office of the County Attorney operates under the Nairobi City County Attorney Act, 2020, which outlines the legal framework governing Nairobi County.

“Accountability and integrity must always take precedence. Your responsibility is to uphold these values and safeguard the county’s interests. Strive to protect the county’s welfare in all your endeavors,” emphasized Ireri, the County Attorney.

In light of the staggering Ksh. 21 billion legal bills recorded in 2022, this initiative marks a significant step towards streamlining legal services within the county. The Nairobi County Government is poised to create a more sustainable and efficient legal framework that supports its ongoing development agenda.
