Junet: ODM Is Kenya’s Only Truly National Party

Suna East MP Junet Mohammed has reiterated that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) serves as the only political party with widespread support across all regions of the country.

During the party’s youth convention at Jamhuri Showground on Monday, Junet characterized rival political entities as limited and regionally focused, asserting that ODM distinguishes itself as a genuinely national party.

“ODM is a major national party. It is not a local or village party like some smaller organizations that have emerged recently,” Junet stated.

He specifically targeted former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of continuously criticizing ODM leadership while lacking the political foundation to compete with the party.

“Rigathi Gachagua makes noise daily, constantly lecturing us. He frequently mentions our party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga, national chairperson Gladys Wanga, and myself. His party, DCP, does not possess the strength to rival ours, even in Migori County,” Junet remarked.

Junet underscored that ODM’s strength lies in its diversity, especially in urban centers like Nairobi, which he described as a cosmopolitan hub that embodies the party’s national appeal.

“We will demonstrate to Rigathi that Nairobi is not a venue for local parties or single-tribe representation. Nairobi is home to all tribes, and the party that embraces this diversity is ODM,” he stated.

Regarding the ongoing discourse surrounding the so-called “broad-based government,” Junet clarified that this concept is not a political party but rather a governing arrangement supported by both the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and ODM.

“People claim they are endorsing a broad-based government. However, broad-based is not a party; the party to support is ODM,” he explained. “If anyone wishes to form a government with us in 2027 or enter an alliance, they must engage through ODM.”

The convention attracted hundreds of delegates, youth leaders, and party officials, marking the commencement of a nationwide mobilization campaign aimed at young people.

This initiative forms part of a broader strategy by ODM to revitalize its support base following a period of political uncertainty.

The push follows the Central Committee’s decision to implement what it termed a “vigorous and rigorous” program designed to rejuvenate and energize the party across the nation.

Chaired by Oburu Oginga, the committee framed this initiative as essential for consolidating ODM’s identity and enhancing its presence, particularly in traditional strongholds.

As part of the program, ODM plans to conduct youth conventions in at least 25 counties, starting with Nairobi before proceeding to Mombasa on April 26.

The schedule will briefly pause between May 1 and May 3 for a joint National Executive Committee and Parliamentary Group retreat, uniting the top party leadership and governors.
