Kenya’s aviation routes are being exploited by drug trafficking networks, but a recent development has dealt them another significant setback. Anti-Narcotics Unit detectives have apprehended a key suspect at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after discovering almost one kilogram of cocaine hidden in the suspect’s stomach.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) made the arrest announcement in a statement posted on its verified X account on 24 November 2025.
An interception took place at JKIA.
A 34-year-old individual of interest had recently disembarked from an Ethiopian Airlines flight originating from Addis Ababa when detectives, following specific information, took action. Upon arrival, she was isolated and taken to the ANU offices within the airport for close observation.
The person under observation started releasing the narcotics. Within minutes, she released the initial 14 pellets of cocaine, prompting detectives to keep a close surveillance. She then fired an additional 14 pellets, which increased the overall count to 28.
“She was taken to the ANU offices for observation, and within minutes, the truth started to emerge, as she expelled 14 pellets of cocaine.” Detectives kept a close eye on the scene and shortly afterwards, another 14 pellets emerged, bringing the total to 28 pellets, weighing 912.74 grams and valued at approximately Sh3,650,960.
The DCI stated that the substance weighed 912.74 grams and was worth around Ksh3,650,960 on the black market.
A subsequent X-ray examination conducted on her confirmed that no extra pellets remained in her body. The scan’s results were negative, confirming that all concealed narcotics had been eliminated. A subsequent test confirmed the white powdery substance was cocaine.
Cracking down on drug traffickers
The ANU team at JKIA has maintained a strong control over drug trafficking routes, intercepting couriers who were trying to use Nairobi as a transit point.
The individual of interest is currently being held in lawful custody at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Police Station as detectives complete the necessary paperwork prior to her court appearance. “The DCI confirmed that she remains in custody as detectives prepare her for arraignment.”
This operation marks another successful interception by the Anti-Narcotics Unit, demonstrating Kenya’s increased awareness and watchfulness against transnational drug cartels targeting its airports. Authorities assert their determination to prevent the country from being used as a narcotics trafficking route.
