Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh dies at 92

Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. Singh, who served as prime minister from 2004 to 2014 and previously as finance minister, was a pivotal figure in India’s economic reforms.

His health had deteriorated recently, leading to hospitalization in Delhi. Tributes poured in, including heartfelt messages from current Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who noted Singh’s wisdom and efforts to improve lives. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed personal loss, calling Singh a mentor.

Singh, the first Indian leader re-elected after a full term since Jawaharlal Nehru, was also the first Sikh to hold the office. His tenure was marked by significant economic growth but overshadowed by corruption allegations that contributed to his party’s defeat in 2014.

Born on September 26, 1932, in Punjab, Singh overcame financial hardships to pursue higher education at Cambridge and Oxford. He first gained prominence as finance minister in 1991, implementing transformative economic policies that revived India’s economy.

Known for his low profile and calm demeanor, Singh often avoided media attention. He faced scrutiny during his later years, including legal challenges related to corruption, but remained engaged in political discourse, advocating for economic reforms during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Singh is survived by his wife and three daughters. His legacy as an architect of India’s economic resurgence and a consensus builder will be remembered by many.
