Former Chief Justice David Maraga has outlined conditions for collaborating with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i ahead of the 2027 elections.
In an interview on the Obinna Show on Monday, November 25, 2025, Maraga, who is aspiring to the presidency, explained that his stance is motivated by the youth who protested against the Finance Bill 2024, led by Gen Z activists.
He said that if his fellow Gusii, Fred Matiang’i, wants to join forces with him, he must first meet certain non-negotiable criteria before Maraga agrees to work with him.
Maraga elaborated that Matiang’i must start by embracing his vision for the country, which includes respecting the rule of law and combating corruption. He added that if Matiang’i supports these principles, they will collaborate as they approach 2027.
“If he accepts my vision, we will work together,” Maraga stated. He also emphasized that he will not give up his leadership position and that anyone wishing to partner with him must accept him as the presidential candidate, with others supporting him.
Regarding the possibility of teaming up with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Maraga spoke highly of the former vice president, noting that they were law classmates at the University of Nairobi. He expressed openness to working with Kalonzo, given their long-standing friendship.
However, he insisted that, like Matiang’i, Kalonzo must first embrace his vision for the country and commit to it before they can collaborate. This requirement also applies to others interested in running for president alongside him.
On the prospect of working with President William Ruto, Maraga firmly rejected the idea, stating their values are fundamentally different. He dismissed any chance of forming a political alliance with Ruto, likening their values to day and night.
He said he cannot partner with someone who orders people to be shot in the leg, insisting that their paths will never align.
