Kisumu Governor mourns the Late Mama Sarah Obama

Kisumu governor Professor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o on Monday led the county in condoling with the family of the late mama Sarah Obama who died on Monday 29th March at around 4.40AM at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital in Kisumu

The governor termed the passing on of the late matriarch as a big blow, describing her as a steadfast woman who cared for not only her family but also the larger Kogello village.

Sarah Anyango Obama the step-grandmother to the 45th US president Barrack Obama was receiving treatment in Kisumu before her death. News of her demise was relayed by the family.

Sarah was the third wife of the former US president’s grandfather and helped raise his father, Barack Obama, Sr. The family is part of Kenya’s Luo ethnic group.

When Barack Obama landed in JKIA in 1987, he was welcomed by his extended family with Mama Sarah Obama, despite not being his biological grandmother, taking good care of him as well as Auma Obama, the daughter of Kezia and Barack.

The 44th US President had close ties to his grandmother and last visited her at the family home in K’Ogello in July 2018. She was the primary caregiver for Barack Obama Sr. after his mother left the family when her children were still young.

She lived in Nyang’oma Kogelo village, Siaya county, 30 miles west of western Kenya’s main town, Kisumu, on the edge of Lake Victoria.

On July 4, 2008, Sarah Obama attended the United States Independence Day celebrations in Nairobi, hosted by Michael Ranneberger, the US ambassador in Kenya.

Family sources say the former US president has received the information about the passing on of Mama Sarah and and is saddened by the news. The family also says that Mama Sarah will be buried before midday March 30th 2021 in line with the Islamic faith.
