Gachagua Not Interested in KSh50 Million Award, Says Lawyer Njeri Maina

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina, who represented former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in his impeachment case, shared that her client isn’t focused on the KSh50 million compensation the Senate might owe after the court ruled his rights were violated.

After the judgment on June 8, 2026, Maina emphasized that this case was never about the money. It’s about upholding the Constitution and ensuring public institutions follow the rule of law. She expressed that the legal team sought justice and aimed to protect the constitutional principles Kenyans embraced in 2010.

Maina confidently stated that Gachagua wouldn’t accept any financial award, reinforcing that the goal was to maintain the integrity of constitutional processes rather than pursue compensation.

“We’re here for the integrity of the Constitution of Kenya, not for the money. Rigathi Gachagua is committed to defending the rule of law and the Constitution that Kenyans approved in 2010.”

Regarding Gachagua’s impeachment, the High Court upheld his October 2024 ousting, with a three-judge bench dismissing all petitions against it. They confirmed that the public participation process by the National Assembly and Senate met constitutional standards, rejecting Gachagua’s claims of unfairness.

The judges also affirmed that President William Ruto acted lawfully when nominating Professor Kithure Kindiki as the new deputy president, without needing public input. They instructed the Senate to award Gachagua KSh50 million for violating his constitutional rights.
