End of campaign period for by-elections set for Thursday

Once again, the campaign period greeted Kenya, and is again coming to an end, in just two days time.

The three by-elections that will be held in Garissa Town constituency, Kandara constituency and Elgeyo Marakwet County on Thursday 5th, will come as a culmination of a campaign period that greeted the electorate during festivities. The campaigns were occasioned by the appointments of Kandara’s Alice Wahome as Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Water, Garissa Town’s Aden Duale as CS for Defence and Elgeyo Marakwet’s Kipchumba Murkomen as the CS for Transport and Roads.

Their promotions to those portfolios have, nevertheless, not stopped them from engaging in combative politics – even as the law doesn’t require them to engage in politics. On Saturday, Defence CS Aden Duale was all over campaigning for UDA’s candidate in Garissa Town, Rtd Major Mohamed Barrow Dekow. During the campaigns, Duale took the opportunity to meet various community leaders who reside in Garissa.

“Today( Saturday), we met and held talks with members of the Luhya community residing in Garissa Township. They unanimously endorsed the candidature of Rtd Major Mohamed Barrow Dekow and promised to vote for him.Orio mno, Mulembe Nation,” Duale said.

In Kandara constituency, Kiharu member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro drummed up support for the UDA candidate Njuguna Chege. “UDA – Kazi ni Kazi. We are African and Africa is our Business. Vote for Njuguna who has the interest of Kandara at heart and will align them with the President’s manifesto,” he said.

Today will mark the end of the campaign period for the three by-elections – just two days before the election date set by the (IEBC) Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
