Electricity Restored After Nationwide Blackout in Kenya

Kenya Power proudly announces the complete restoration of electricity supply nationwide, following a significant power outage that left millions in darkness on Wednesday night.

In a customer alert issued at 6:22 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2026, the utility confirmed that dedicated technical teams worked tirelessly through the night, successfully restoring power to all affected customers by 2:00 a.m. This commitment demonstrates our ongoing efforts to stabilize the national electricity network.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our customers for their patience during this challenging time.

“We are delighted to inform you that power supply was fully restored to all affected customers by 2:00 a.m. today. Your patience and support have been invaluable as our teams diligently worked to restore service,” stated Kenya Power.

The nationwide outage commenced on the night of Wednesday, July 29, prompting Kenya Power to issue its initial alert at 9:05 p.m. This alert confirmed a major disruption impacting Nairobi, the Coast region, Mt. Kenya, and parts of the Central Rift, while parts of the North Rift and Western Kenya remained connected as engineers initiated emergency restoration efforts.

By 10:11 p.m., Kenya Power successfully re-energized the Lanet, Naivasha, and Juja Road substations, allowing electricity supply to resume in select areas of Nairobi and the Central Rift.

As restoration efforts gained momentum, by 11:32 p.m. we announced that electricity had been restored across Mt. Kenya, North Rift, Western Kenya, South Nyanza, and parts of Nairobi. At that point, only certain sections of Nairobi and the Coast region remained without power.

The final phase of restoration concluded at 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, with Kenya Power confirming that electricity supply had been fully restored in all regions of the country.

The blackout sparked public frustration, with many Kenyans expressing their concerns on social media about disruptions to businesses, transport services, and household activities.

While Kenya Power sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience and appreciates our customers’ understanding, we recognize the importance of transparency and will work to provide more detailed updates in the future.

This incident underscores the necessity for ongoing investments to enhance the resilience and reliability of Kenya’s electricity transmission and distribution network, ensuring a brighter future for all.
