A family of Irene Gakwa has been in an agony for almost two years. Irene left her siblings in US in July 2020, and has since been elusive.
At home, her father, Mr Francis Kambo, has tried to cope up with the prevailing situation, but as a parent, there would be no peace of mind without seeing her daughter again. Her two brothers, Kennedy Wainaina and Chris Munga – also in the United States – were the people who hosted Irene Gakwa in 2019 when she just arrived in the US before she met an American boyfriend in Mr Nathan Hightman.
Irene Gakwa had met Mr Nathan in Craigslist, a dating site. Irene then went ahead to relocate from Idaho State, where the two brothers used to stay.
What has been disturbing Mr Kennedy Wainaina most, about Irene and Nathan’s relationship, is that Nathan has been insisting on meeting Wainaina, and asking for a consent from him – so that they’d make a move to live together with his sister.

They (Wainaina and Nathan) would later meet more than 10 times for dinner. Still, he found Hightman to be somewhat “cold”.
Wainaina went ahead to brief the press that he did not understand why Hightman was looking for his approval rather than asking for a direct approval from Irene Gakwa, his sister. “I think he expected us to jump on the wagon and approve … I kept telling him it was my sister’s decision and I wasn’t the one to approve and that it would take time for us to get to know him,” he told a US medium outlet.
Her father, Mr Francis Mambo, has not greeted the information on his daughter’s whereabouts kindly. “Getting GPS of his car’s mobility, cracking his phone has not been done. Moreover, Nathan’s choice to remain silent to the police and not explain what he was burning in a 55-gallon metal drum,” says Kambo. The story on the whereabouts of Irene Gakwa became so emotive that it was featured on CNN and other leading news outlets on the United States.
