Oburu Oginga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), took a step back from his active political role in late August, following medical advice. His last notable political activities occurred earlier that month, where he actively engaged with ODM supporters and participated in a significant UDA-ODM retreat in Naivasha.
On August 1, 2026, he addressed supporters at Kanyadhiang Primary School during a homecoming ceremony for Homa Bay Woman Representative Joyce Osogo. During this event, he defended ODM’s partnership with President William Ruto and shared the party’s plans for a joint manifesto with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 General Election. He also stated that ODM would not field a presidential candidate, choosing instead to support Ruto’s re-election campaign and linking the government’s Vision 2060 to the ideas of his late brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Following the Karachuonyo event, Oburu co-chaired a Joint Broad-Based Coalition Parliamentary Group meeting in Naivasha alongside President Ruto on August 10, 2026. This three-day retreat gathered governors, Members of Parliament, and leaders from both parties to discuss future political strategies. During the meeting, he made a notable comment about his vision, which drew attention when he paused his speech, stating, “my eyes are failing me,” before continuing without his notes. This moment highlighted his ongoing involvement in high-level politics.
Oburu’s last public appearance occurred on August 29, when he enjoyed a round of golf, marking a shift from his previous political engagements. Although this outing was recreational, it was significant as it represented the last widely reported sighting before he withdrew from political activities.
In September, Oburu traveled to the United Kingdom for a medical review, following recommendations from his doctors and ODM leadership. He emphasized that this break was a chance to focus on his health and recharge before returning to his usual activities. On October 6, ODM Communications Director Philip Etale confirmed that Oburu had undergone a routine check-up at Nairobi Hospital and was in good health, though he would temporarily step back from political duties.
Gladys Wanga, the ODM national chairperson, later visited Oburu and reported that he was recovering well and in high spirits.
The timeline indicates that early to mid-August marked the end of Oburu Oginga’s visible political engagements, with significant activities on August 1 and August 10. By August 29, his public focus had shifted away from politics.
As ODM prepares to commemorate the first anniversary of Raila Odinga’s passing and strategize for the upcoming 2027 General Election, Oburu’s absence is notable. However, ODM officials assure that he is taking a temporary break from active politics and is expected to return to his public role after a period of rest.
