The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has reported the registration of 875,501 new voters since the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) began on March 30, 2026. This significant increase reflects a surge in citizen engagement as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections.
In its latest status update, the commission noted that the rising numbers indicate a growing public interest in the ongoing registration effort, which remains open until April 28, 2026. This initiative spans all 1,450 County Assembly Wards, institutions of higher learning, Huduma Centres, constituency offices, and the Customer Experience Centre at Anniversary Towers.
The latest figures reveal a remarkable increase of 531,185 new voters since the previous update on April 3, showcasing strong momentum in the nationwide registration campaign. The IEBC stated, “The number of new registered voters since the beginning of ECVR on March 30, 2026, to April 9, 2026, stands at 875,501.”
Additionally, the commission recorded that 49,502 voters have transferred their registrations to new polling stations for greater convenience in upcoming elections, while 1,066 voters have updated their personal registration details.
Nairobi County leads in new voter registrations, with 96,897 voters, followed by Kiambu with 46,265 and Kakamega with 40,110. Conversely, Lamu and Isiolo reported the lowest registration figures, with 4,810 and 5,379 voters, respectively.
The rise in registration numbers can be attributed to heightened civic awareness and active stakeholder engagement at various levels. The IEBC highlighted Kenyans’ commitment to participating in the democratic process.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon praised citizens for their enthusiastic turnout, calling it a testament to patriotism and national responsibility. “The Commission is deeply inspired by the patriotic spirit displayed by Kenyans over the past week. We extend our sincere appreciation to the hundreds of thousands who have stepped forward to claim their right to vote,” the statement conveyed.
The commission underscored that voter registration is essential for strengthening democracy and ensuring accountable leadership, urging eligible citizens who have yet to register to take advantage of the remaining time to enlist.
“As we approach the 2027 General Election, registering as a voter is the first and most vital step in deepening our democratic roots and ensuring sound leadership for future generations,” the commission stated.
The IEBC also emphasized that the registration exercise occurs daily, including weekends and public holidays, to maximize accessibility for all citizens.
However, the commission expressed concerns regarding isolated incidents of attacks on registration staff during the exercise. It condemned these actions and called upon security agencies and the public to protect electoral officials as they carry out their duties. “The safety of our personnel is paramount, and we urge all Kenyans to safeguard IEBC officers during this crucial national duty,” the statement added.
Existing voters are encouraged to verify their registration details through the commission’s online portal to ensure accuracy in the voter register ahead of future elections.
