Kenyan Embassy in Kinshasa Attacked Amid Escalating DRC Conflict

The Kenyan Embassy in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, has come under siege from protesters expressing their anger over the ongoing conflict in the eastern region of the country. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei described the assailants as “marauding protesters” reacting to the violence that has claimed the lives of at least 17 people.

Intense clashes between M23 fighters, reportedly backed by Rwanda, and Congolese government forces have intensified, leaving many casualties on the streets and overwhelming local hospitals. In response to the escalating crisis, President Félix Tshisekedi convened a meeting with key national leaders in Kinshasa on January 27, 2025, to address the situation.

The M23 rebels have made significant advances in Goma, prompting thousands to flee their homes as the violence worsens. During the meeting, Vital Kamerhe, the Speaker of the National Assembly, indicated that President Tshisekedi is poised to address the nation regarding the crisis.

The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, with increasing numbers of people displaced by the ongoing conflict, further compounding the challenges faced by the Congolese government and the international community.

Apart from the Kenyan embassy, the other embassies attacked were the Rwandan Embassy, the French one, the Ugandan one, the South African one amongst others.
