Gen. Muhoozi Warns Uganda May Cut Ties with Turkey in a Month

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, has issued a firm warning to Turkey, stating that Uganda may sever diplomatic relations within 30 days if certain unresolved issues are not addressed.

In a pointed message shared on his X account on Saturday, April 11, 2026, Kainerugaba expressed frustration over what he perceives as Turkey’s prolonged inaction, signaling a potential shift in the diplomatic relationship between the two nations.

“The real problem lies with Turkey! We have awaited their rehabilitation, but to no avail! We will terminate ALL diplomatic relations with Turkey in the next 30 days if they fail to resolve our concerns!” Kainerugaba asserted.

He further intensified his warning by indicating that Uganda may also restrict Turkish aviation operations, hinting at possible limitations on air travel between the two countries if the dispute remains unresolved. “We shall block their airlines too!” Kainerugaba added.

While the specific grievances remain unclear, his remarks reflect growing dissatisfaction within Uganda’s leadership regarding its ties with Ankara. The term ‘rehabilitate’ suggests underlying political, security, or economic issues, although no official details have been released.

This strong warning marks a significant escalation, as severing diplomatic relations is typically a last resort in international affairs. Analysts caution that such a move could have profound implications, affecting trade, military collaboration, and bilateral agreements between Uganda and Turkey.

Kainerugaba’s statement is poised to elicit reactions not only from both governments but also from regional and international observers closely monitoring the situation. As of now, Turkey has not officially responded to the ultimatum.

If implemented, this action could fundamentally alter Uganda-Turkey relations and potentially shift the balance of power in the region.
