Preparations are in top gear for the much-anticipated North Gem Super League, a vibrant grassroots football tournament organized by Red Santos Football Club. The tournament, scheduled to run from 11th to 17th August 2025 at Malanga Primary School, is drawing attention from both local communities and regional leaders.
The North Gem Super League is the result of a consultative collaboration between local football coaches drawn from across the ward and the Office of the Chief, working together to use sport as a vehicle for positive social transformation.
The league aims to achieve four major goals:
1.Combat drug and substance abuse among youth
2.Conserve the environment through integrated awareness activities
3.Identify, nurture, and promote football talent
4.Foster unity and peace through collective participation
“This initiative is not just about football,” said Mr. Onyango H. Okoth, the lead organizer. “It’s about reclaiming our youth, restoring our pride, and renewing our community spirit.”
Over 240 players from 12 local teams will compete in the tournament, with the local administration playing a key role in ensuring discipline and sobriety throughout the event. Chief Philip Owuor of Malanga has pledged oversight and support to safeguard the event’s goals, especially in addressing alcohol and substance abuse during the matches.
To show solidarity with the people and champion the sports agenda, local leaders have been invited to attend, including the Member of Parliament, who has been requested to issue certificates and award the prize money to winning teams. While his attendance is yet to be confirmed, organizers remain hopeful for his participation in what promises to be a landmark event for North Gem Ward.
Organizers have also reached out to various sponsors and stakeholders to help meet logistical and welfare needs, including nutritional support, kits, trophies, and health services. A serious branding and awareness campaign has already been launched to ensure wide community turnout and engagement.
With aspirations of becoming an annual tradition, the North Gem Super League is designed not only to unite the ward but also to inspire sister wards across Gem Constituency to adopt similar community-driven sports programs as tools for youth empowerment and social change.
The league depends on its partnership with lifetime music records, under the stewardship of the nationally renowned Producer Katiz, to develop the creative talent available in the community in tandem with sports as part of future plans.
