Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as KK Mwenyewe, a beloved comedian renowned for his captivating impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has died. The news was confirmed by fellow comedian and collaborator Kafengo, who announced that Kariuki passed away at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital on Monday night after a brief illness.
“We are deeply saddened to share the loss of Zakaria Kariuki, aka Mr KK Mwenyewe. He passed away yesterday evening while receiving medical care at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital,” Kafengo posted on Facebook. “During this difficult time, we ask for your support and prayers. To his family and friends, may God grant you strength. Rest in peace, KK Mwenyewe.”
Kariuki, a student at Kisii University, gained widespread fame in 2022 through his humorous skits imitating Gachagua’s reactions to political events, especially his own exaggerated portrayal of the former Deputy President. His ability to mimic Gachagua’s mannerisms, including dressing in an oversized suit and sporting a potbelly, earned him a massive following. His social media platforms—TikTok and Facebook—boasted 1.1 million and 412,000 followers respectively, with his final videos posted on July 4.
His comedy, characterized by deadpan humor and relatable sketches, resonated deeply with Kenyans. He portrayed various characters—from politicians to teachers and everyday Kenyans—garnering hundreds of thousands of views for each skit. His talent for satire and social commentary made him a standout figure in Kenya’s creative scene.
Kariuki’s rise to fame was marked by media interviews and recognition from notable figures. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja even stepped in to assist him financially by clearing his university fee balance, recognizing his talent and potential.
Following his passing, tributes poured in from fellow comedians, fans, and politicians alike. Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah praised Kariuki for using satire as a tool for societal reflection, emphasizing his role in uniting and educating Kenyans rather than dividing them.
“Kenya has lost not just a comedian, but a cultural icon and a young patriot with a brave heart,” Omtatah stated. “My condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire creative community. May his soul rest in peace, and may his light continue to inspire courage and creativity.”
As of now, the cause of his sudden illness remains undisclosed, though images of him hospitalized have circulated widely on social media. Gachagua has yet to comment on Kariuki’s passing at the time of this report.
Kariuki’s legacy as a talented satirist and social commentator will undoubtedly be remembered by many Kenyans who appreciated his humor and courage to speak truth through comedy.
