Eric Omondi Arrested Over Recent Fuel Protests in Nairobi

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of comedian and activist Erick Omondi on June 5, 2026, at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Detectives from DCI Central, in collaboration with CRIB Nairobi Region, acted on credible intelligence during ongoing inquiries.

Omondi faces allegations related to recent fuel protests in Nairobi. He is currently providing a statement at the Nairobi Region DCI Headquarters as authorities process him for a potential court appearance.

This arrest is part of a broader investigation involving multiple suspects linked to the same incidents. The DCI noted that some of these individuals had already faced court on May 18, 2026, and investigations are ongoing.

The DCI emphasizes that while the Constitution protects the right to assemble and demonstrate peacefully, these rights must be exercised responsibly and legally. Any criminal actions disguised as protests will be thoroughly investigated and addressed firmly.

The agency warns that it will take decisive action against anyone involved in such offenses, stating, “No matter where you hide, the long arm of the law will catch up with you.”

The investigation continues, and the DCI assures that all suspects will be handled according to the law.

Earlier, Erick shared on social media that he had been arrested by a group of men. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino later confirmed his visit to Omondi at the Nairobi Area Regional Police Headquarters post-arrest, stating, “We are with @ericomondi at Nairobi Area Regional Police Headquarters. Eric was arrested today at JKIA at 12:15 PM. Let’s meet in court on Monday and come prepared. #FreeEricOmondi”
