Utumishi Girls Fire: Teachers Ignored Warning Before Deadly Arson

Two teachers at Utumishi Girls School were alerted about planned unrest by some Form Three students, according to Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba.

Despite this warning, the teachers failed to act before the tragic arson incident. The CS confirmed that investigations revealed the fire was indeed an act of arson.

Currently, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations is questioning eight students as part of the inquiry to determine their roles in this serious event. Those responsible will face charges under the Penal Code and relevant laws.

Ogamba also highlighted safety violations at the school, such as overcrowded dormitories and a locked exit door, which went against safety regulations.

The fire resulted in injuries to 79 students; seven remain hospitalized at Kenyatta National Hospital, while others have been treated and released. The bodies of the deceased have been moved to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital for identification, and parents are encouraged to come for DNA testing.

Ongoing investigations will address the fire’s cause and any lapses in care.

Tragically, 16 students lost their lives in this incident. President William Ruto expressed the nation’s sorrow, calling it a painful tragedy.

He extended heartfelt condolences to the families and emphasized the government’s commitment to aid those affected, ensuring treatment for the injured and support for grieving families.

As we navigate this difficult time, let’s come together to support one another and honor the memory of those we lost.
