A 14-year-old British-Kenyan boy connected to a tragic shooting incident at a ranch in Laikipia West Subcounty has been released on bail following his arraignment.
The suspect, a Kenyan of British descent, arrived at Rumuruti Police Station on April 24, 2026, accompanied by his father and legal counsel.
Reports indicate that the boys were engaged in a hunting expedition at the time of the incident.
The minor, a ninth-grade student, sustained fatal injuries allegedly inflicted by the rancher’s son during a hyena-hunting activity.
Local elders assert that the victim was shot by a friend using his father’s Mark Four CZ 527 rifle, prompting the community to call for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
During the hunting exercise, the assailant accidentally shot the victim, leading to widespread demands for justice from local residents.
The father of the suspect informed authorities that his son has asthma, providing medical documentation to substantiate this claim.
Police arrested the teenager and charged him with murder.
He was subsequently brought before the Rumuruti Law Courts under a miscellaneous criminal application for directions, given his status as a minor.
The court granted him a surety bond of Sh1.5 million, requiring one surety of the same amount, or an alternative cash bail of Sh500,000.
Additionally, the court mandated that both the suspect and his father surrender their passports to limit travel.
The suspect successfully raised the cash bail and was released.
The case is set for mention on May 5, 2026, to review the progress of investigations currently being conducted by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Laikipia West.

He was interrogated and provided a statement as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities processed him for court appearance and released him on a cash bail of Sh100,000, pending charges for allegedly allowing a minor access to a firearm, in violation of the Firearms Act.
According to police, the incident was reported on April 22, 2026.
The victim reportedly died the previous night under unclear circumstances at the ranch.
Preliminary findings reveal that the bullet entered through the victim’s right rear shoulder and exited through the upper right side of the chest.
