Eugene Wamalwa, the leader of the Democratic Action Party (DAP-K), has shared insights into the United Opposition’s strategy for the Ol Kalou by-election, which became vacant on March 28 following the passing of MP David Njuguna Kiaraho after a prolonged battle with cancer.
During an X Space discussion on the evening of March 29, 2026, the former defense cabinet secretary emphasized their collaborative approach, similar to their efforts in the last three by-elections. Wamalwa highlighted the successful alliances formed in previous contests, such as the Malava by-election where the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate, Edgar Busiega, supported DAP-K’s Seth Panyako, and in Mbeere North, where DCP backed Democratic Party candidate Newton Karish. He affirmed that this spirit of unity will guide their actions in Ol Kalou.
Wamalwa stated, “For the Ol Kalou by-election, we are committed to working as a united front. Our collaboration in the previous three by-elections, especially in Malava, showcases our dedication to this approach.”
He further reiterated, “Unity is not merely an option; it is essential.”
This announcement follows the death of Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, who passed away due to cancer at Nairobi Hospital on March 29, 2026. In response, the National Assembly Speaker has established a nine-member committee to oversee the funeral arrangements for Kiaraho, who was serving his third term in Parliament after being elected in 2013.
Led by Kinangop MP Kwenya Thuku and supported by Nyandarua MP Faith Gitau, the committee will coordinate closely with Kiaraho’s family to ensure a dignified farewell. The official statement confirmed, “I have appointed members to the Funeral Preparation Committee to collaborate with the family and organize a respectful send-off for the late Hon. Kiaraho. Hon. Kwenya Thuku will lead the team, alongside Hon. Faith Gitau, CBS, and seven other members.”
