University of Nairobi dismisses degree linked to Ruto

Deputy president William Ruto.

The University of Nairobi (UON) has been forced to distance itself from an online degree purportedly belonging to deputy president William Samoei Ruto.

Since Thursday, there had been a certificate linked to William Ruto that had been going rounds on the social media and according to the document, the deputy president allegedly graduated with second class honors Lower Division at the prestigious university.

However, the University of Nairobi in a quick rejoinder flagged the academic document (degree) as fake, something which has left Kenyans wondering whether William Ruto was an alumni of the UON or not.

The certificate showed that the deputy president graduated in 1990 having successfully completed a bachelor of degree in Botany.

Ruto’s purported degree went viral just a day after he accused the Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga of lacking academic certificates. He made these sentiments while addressing a political rally on Thursday. The second in command went ahead to defend the Nairobi United Democratic Alliance (UDA) gubernatorial flag bearer Johnson Sakaja.

Senator Sakaja has been at the center of public attention following reports that he forged his academic documents in the neighboring Uganda. According to Sakaja, he graduated from Team University where he obtained his degree.
