The high-profile African Union meeting in Luanda, Angola, was chaired by President William Ruto.
The meeting concentrated on pressing reforms intended to bolster the continental organisation and revive its international standing.
Ruto stated in a Facebook post on Tuesday, November 26, 2025, that African Union reform can no longer be put off.
“Implementing the reform of the African Union is a pressing and crucial action required to guarantee it promotes the African voice and agenda more efficiently,” Ruto stated.
He cautioned that inaction could undermine the institution.
“He warned that without significant change, the AU will become ineffective, resulting in a much greater loss of potential opportunities and reduced influence.”
The meeting, led by Ruto, gathered Heads of State who were part of the African Union Institutional Reform Ad Hoc Committee, focusing on redefining the future of the organisation.
The reform report, according to Ruto, concentrated on eight key priority areas.
This includes the revitalization of peace and security systems, enhanced financing structures, and the operationalization of the African Court of Justice.
He also acknowledged the necessity of streamlining the AU agenda format to enhance efficiency and decrease delays in decision-making processes.
Ruto pointed out that others are reforming the Pan-African Parliament and the way decisions are classified.
Ruto provides reassurance.
Other areas of concern involve the division of labour among AU organs as well as the reorganisation of remaining institutions and offices, thus establishing a more coordinated and responsive framework.
Ruto stated that these reforms are achievable, emphasizing the importance of unity among African leaders for their successful implementation.
The leader also announced that an inclusive summit will take place, during which Heads of State will share their perspectives.
“A summit of Heads of State will be convened where they will define a more robust and responsive Union, in order to make the reform process more inclusive,” Ruto stated.
The Angola meeting represents a crucial milestone in reorienting Africa’s approach to governance.
Its success will hinge on the political goodwill and sustained cooperation among member states.
As Africa confronts increasing global challenges, the message from Luanda remains unambiguous. The continent needs to present a unified front, act collectively, and progress with direction.
