Ruto announces dualling of Nairobi-Nakuru highway

Kenyans can look forward to improved travel on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, as President William Ruto announced plans to dual the road following recent traffic congestion issues.

Speaking during a church service at AIC Kipkorgot in Uasin Gishu County, the President revealed that construction would begin next year.

The dual carriageway project will be undertaken by a private contractor under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework. It will be executed in two phases: the first phase will extend from Nairobi to Nakuru, while the second will stretch from Nakuru to Malaba.

President Ruto explained that the delay in the project was due to a breach of contract with a French company initially contracted for the highway’s revamp. “We had a PPP programme with a French company, but it did not work out. However, we have alternatives that we are working on,” he stated.

He reassured the public that discussions with various private companies are already underway. The announcement follows significant traffic snarls at the Rironi-Naivasha-Nakuru and Rironi-Mai Mahiu-Naivasha sections of the highway.

In light of the delays, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has urged motorists to remain patient and follow lane discipline while alternative routes are suggested to ease congestion. KeNHA has committed to providing traffic control to ensure safe and timely travel.
