Raila Odinga Faces SADC Setback in AUC Chairperson Bid

Raila reveals what he will do if he loses the AUC Chairperson elections

Tensions are mounting as Raila Odinga, Kenya’s candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, faces a significant hurdle with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) withholding its support. SADC’s stance is crucial, given its influence among the AU’s 55 member states.

In a recent statement, SADC emphasized the need for a candidate who embodies unity and consensus across the continent. “As we approach the elections, it is imperative that we support a leader who can bring together diverse voices and foster collaboration,” a SADC representative remarked, casting doubt on Odinga’s ability to rally the necessary backing.

With SADC comprising 16 member countries—including Angola, Botswana, and Zimbabwe—its lack of endorsement poses a serious challenge for Odinga. The voting process at the 38th Ordinary Summit, where heads of state will cast their votes, requires a two-thirds majority—33 votes—making SADC’s position all the more critical.

Kenyan President William Ruto arrived in Addis Ababa on Thursday to advocate for Raila Odinga, yet the absence of SADC support looms large over their discussions. “We are hopeful that our colleagues in SADC will reconsider their stance and recognize the value of Kenya’s leadership,” President Ruto stated.

As the election draws near, the pressure mounts for Odinga to secure broader support beyond SADC, with the potential to reshape the future of African leadership. The AU summit promises to be a pivotal moment, and all eyes will be on the ballot box as this high-stakes drama unfolds. Stay tuned for the latest developments!
