Tensions escalated in Wajir County as relatives of Yussuf Hussein Ahmed, the missing Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Della Anole Ward, staged protests after finding his mutilated body.
Yussuf, who had been missing since September 13, was found dead in the Lake Yahud area, more than a month after his abduction.
In a video circulating online, distressed family members and locals could be seen shouting and running in groups, expressing their outrage and sorrow.
Police officers attempted to control the crowd, taking guard in the area and trying to disperse the demonstrators.
The body of the MCA was identified by his family at a local mortuary, where it was discovered with signs of severe torture, extensive burns, and evidence of brutal beatings.
Witnesses reported that the body was badly decomposed, with the victim’s eyes gouged out, sparking widespread shock and grief among the local community.
The mystery surrounding Ahmed’s abduction has lingered since he vanished over a month ago, and the uncertainty regarding the identity of those responsible for his brutal murder has heightened tensions in the community.
The discovery of Ahmed’s body comes after the High Court instructed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to ensure the safety of key witnesses in the ongoing inquiry into his kidnapping.
Justice Alexander Muteti had also mandated that a progress report on the case be submitted by October 7.
Despite these efforts, police investigations have yet to yield significant leads, as crucial CCTV footage from the time of the abduction remains missing from several key locations.
Senior Superintendent of Police Justus Imaana revealed that they have acquired two pieces of CCTV footage but are still seeking additional recordings.
He also mentioned that a request for further assistance from the Internet Crime Complaint Centre (IC3) was denied.
As the investigation continues, the residents of Wajir are left grieving the loss of a cherished leader and are calling for answers regarding the horrific killing.
