Zinedine Zidane’s telling three-word verdict on United job

Zinedine Zidane continues to be linked with Manchester United amid the club’s disappointing start to the Premier League season.

The legendary French manager has been out of a job for over three years since ending his second tenure at Real Madrid, but that hasn’t diminished the speculation about him potentially taking charge at Old Trafford.

Recent reports have reignited the connection between Zidane and United, especially as pressure mounts on current manager Erik ten Hag. While some have raised concerns about Zidane working in England due to the language barrier, Zidane himself hinted at the possibility in a 2022 interview, stating, “Never say never.”

In an interview with L’Equipe, he addressed the prospect of managing in the Premier League, saying, “Never say never, especially as a coach today. If I return to a club, it is to win. I say this with humility, but I need the right conditions.

For example, when someone asks, ‘Do you want to go to Manchester [United]?’, I understand English, but I don’t speak it fluently.” He added, “I know some coaches go to clubs without speaking the language, but I approach it differently. Winning requires many factors, and I know what I need for success. While victory isn’t guaranteed, you must create the right conditions.”

Though Zidane has been out of the coaching scene for a while, rumors of his return to management have intensified, especially after he was spotted attending a Real Betis training session last month. It’s believed he was there to watch his son, Elyaz, who is training with the senior squad.

Zidane, who enjoyed a hugely successful managerial career at Real Madrid—winning La Liga twice and the Champions League three times—has also been frequently linked with the French national team, which is said to be his dream job.

While he has kept his plans under wraps, he did confirm in May that he would not be taking over at Bayern Munich, leaving his future open for speculation.
