Preliminary Report: Thick Fog and Low Clouds Blamed in Crash That Killed Ng’eno

Investigators point to adverse weather conditions as autopsies confirm injuries consistent with the fatal incident.

Thick fog and low cloud cover were the primary factors in the tragic crash that claimed the life of former Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno and several others, according to a preliminary report released by aviation investigators.

The report, issued by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) and the Air Accident Investigation Department (AAID), indicates that the aircraft encountered severe weather conditions shortly before the accident, significantly reducing visibility for the pilot and contributing to the loss of control. Investigators noted that the weather in the area at the time of the incident was characterized by dense fog and low-hanging clouds, creating hazardous flying conditions that likely impaired the pilot’s ability to navigate safely.

The crash, which occurred earlier this month, sent shockwaves across the country, with political leaders, colleagues, and constituents mourning the loss of Ng’eno, who was widely regarded as a charismatic and influential figure in Narok County politics. He had previously served as the Member of Parliament for Emurua Dikirr and remained an active and respected voice in the region’s political landscape.

Aviation experts familiar with the terrain noted that the area where the crash occurred is prone to sudden weather changes, particularly during certain times of the year when morning fog and low cloud cover can develop rapidly, creating dangerous conditions for low-altitude flights. The preliminary report suggests that the pilot may have been caught off guard by the rapidly deteriorating visibility while navigating the region’s hilly and densely vegetated terrain.

Meanwhile, autopsies conducted on all victims of the crash have been completed, with pathologists confirming that the injuries sustained were consistent with those typically associated with high-impact aviation accidents. The postmortem examinations, carried out by a team of government pathologists at the request of the families and investigative authorities, revealed that the victims died from multiple traumatic injuries resulting from the impact of the crash.

Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor, who oversaw the autopsies, stated that the findings were thorough and would assist investigators in reconstructing the final moments leading up to the accident. He noted that while the autopsies confirmed the cause of death in each case, they did not reveal any pre-existing medical conditions that could have contributed to the incident.

“All examinations were conducted with the utmost care and professionalism, and we have provided the families with detailed reports. The injuries we documented are consistent with a sudden, violent impact, which aligns with the circumstances of the crash,” Dr. Oduor said.

The families of the victims have been receiving counselling and support as they await the final report from the investigative agencies. Several family members expressed gratitude for the thoroughness of the postmortem process but reiterated their desire for answers regarding the precise sequence of events that led to the tragedy.

The Air Accident Investigation Department has indicated that its full investigation is ongoing, with the preliminary findings now serving as the foundation for a more detailed analysis. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft’s maintenance history, the pilot’s qualifications and experience, and any potential mechanical or technical factors that may have contributed to the accident, alongside the weather conditions highlighted in the preliminary report.

Aviation safety experts have called for enhanced weather monitoring and communication systems for pilots operating in regions prone to sudden fog and low cloud conditions. They have also emphasized the importance of strict adherence to visual flight rules (VFR) and the need for pilots to exercise heightened caution when navigating in areas with unpredictable weather patterns.

As the investigation continues, the preliminary report’s findings have provided some clarity to grieving families and the wider public, even as questions remain about the full circumstances surrounding the crash that claimed the life of a beloved former lawmaker and several others.

The final report, which is expected to be released in the coming months, will offer a more comprehensive analysis of the crash and may include recommendations aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future. Until then, the families of the victims continue to mourn their loss, comforted by the preliminary findings while awaiting the conclusion of the investigative process
