Otiende Warns ODM Against Boasting About Broad-Based Govt Role

Otiende Amollo, the National Vice Chairman of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has chastised a faction of party officials, cautioning that their thoughtless remarks and constant boasts of being part of the broad-based government may ultimately render their party powerless.

On Saturday, November 29, 2025, Amollo spoke in his Luo dialect, urging party members to preserve their values within the broad-based government, and to guarantee that their significance remains safeguarded.

Government positions.

The Rarieda MP also criticised the constant references to being part of a broad-based government, pointing out that most of those making such claims had never even spoken to Raila Odinga.

Our government has fewer positions compared to other areas. One community has more cabinet secretaries and principal secretaries than we have. They also have a position of deputy president. Have you ever heard them repeatedly claiming to be part of the government? He said that continually asserting we are in power devalues us.

The Rarieda MP went on to say that ODM must alter its strategy due to its significant numerical advantage.

You have to wait for your turn to be summoned and demonstrate your worth. He stated that we have not declined to participate in the government but must uphold dignity and exercise strategic restraint.

According to Omollo, ODM party members should stop constantly reminding everyone that they are in power, and instead focus on demonstrating their value through their achievements and influence.

The party vice chairman insisted that this is the sole means by which the party can preserve its significance within the coalition and earn the esteem and worth it is entitled to.

The leader also clarified Raila Odinga’s last-minute directive, stating that the veteran politician’s decision to take the party into government did not imply they were obliged to stay there indefinitely.

As a large group, we have to agree to specific conditions when we participate in such collaborations. Raila only stated that they will remain in the government until 2027. The decision is ultimately ours to make. Our decision after 2027 will be based on the situation at the time, and we may choose to remain or depart. He added that nobody can say they will stay with Ruto beyond that point.

Many others, including Edwin Sifuna, James Orengo and Ruth Odinga, have shared similar sentiments regarding a rethink of the party’s stance in the broad-based arrangement.
